Barclays Spaces for Sports uses the power of sport to give disadvantaged young people the skills they need to improve their prospects for the future.

Over the past decade, we’ve invested £40m in the UK and internationally, working with partners who are experts in harnessing the positive values of sport to help young people fulfill their potential.

Young people who have dropped out of school, or have had limited education or training opportunities, are hit hardest by the rising trend in youth unemployment. Spaces for Sports provides them with the skills, confidence and experience they need to make a positive transition back into education, access training or gain meaningful employment. For example, using sport to engage, our partners help young people to develop skills such as communication, team work, CV writing and money management to gain qualifications and get into work.

We’ve developed 200 community sports sites in the UK alone and our focus is ensuring the long-term sustainability of these facilities.

Around the world, Spaces for Sports programmes now exist in China, Hong Kong, India, South Africa, Spain, the UK, the USA, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Spaces for Sports builds on Barclays’ long and established tradition of investing in sport, both at the elite and grassroots level. Our sponsorship of the Barclays Premier League, Barclays ATP World Tour Finals and Barclays Center in New York complements the work we do in the community.

Spaces for Sports - Sonu

Sonu: eyes on opening a convenience store

Sonu’s story

Sonu Bahadur, 14, lives in a very poor community in Delhi, India, and like so many of her peers has already dropped out of school. She subsequently joined a Spaces for Sports street cricket and educational programme delivered by the charity Magic Bus, and has developed a real spark for the game. She has also learnt some really useful skills like how to work as part of a team, communicate effectively and resolve conflicts. One day she hopes to put these skills to use by opening a convenience store in the Begampur.

Spaces for Sports - Jephthe

Jephthe: gaining confidence

Jephthe’s story

Jephthe Gnapi, 20, has completed the My Future Goal programme, which is a partnership between Spaces for Sports and the Fulham Football Club Foundation in London, UK. Unemployed when he joined, Jephthe gained confidence through CV-writing, interview preparation and money management training, which ultimately gave him the experience he needed to apply for the Barclays Apprenticeship Programme. Now that he’s been accepted, he has set his hopes on becoming an accountant for a football club.

My Future Goal has given me the confidence to apply for various different opportunities, including the Barclays Apprenticeship Scheme. I had never thought about working for a bank, but now it has become a reality.

Barclays spaces for sports

1. Use sport to engage

The principle:

Our partners use the power of sport to deliver world class programmes that engage young people.

An example in practice:

The charity, Grassroot Soccer, harnesses the huge passion felt for soccer to introduce young Africans to activities that enable them to learn from their peers.

2. Develop skills

The principle:

The young people develop skills in communications, team work, CV writing and money management to gain qualifications and get into work.

An example in practice:

From this group, 200 coaches undergo intensive training - giving them the knowledge and skills to deliver employability and financial literacy workshops to 10,000 young people.

3. Ongoing support

The principle:

Our partners provide support for the next stage of development, whether it's employment, training or further education.

An example in practice:

The young coaches are then supported to help identify opportunities for a career. Many get into full-time work. A support network aids their professional development.
