Barclays Commemorates Earth day-2008
Barclays Bank cleans up Boseja ward
23rd April 2008
Barclays Bank of Botswana on April 22nd joined the world in commemorating Earth Day, aimed at raising awareness on environmental issues including deforestation, soil erosion and pollution.
Employees of the bank visited the Stepping Stones International, an after school centre for orphaned and vulnerable children in Mochudi, to sensitize them on issues pertaining to environmental management. They further embarked on a clean up campaign at Boseja ward in the village, to demonstrate their commitment to environmental cleanliness.
According to the Bank’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Esther Norris, this gesture is in line with the Bank’s values of actively participating in community activities. “This affirms our commitment as a bank, to environmental conservation and giving back to the community, thus demonstrating that our business is intertwined with a high level of social responsibility” she said.
In an interview, Lisa Jamu founder and President of the centre commended Barclays Bank Botswana for proactively inviting them to the commemoration of the event, saying it was very rewarding as the children at the centre got educated on environmental conservation to further enhance their life skills.
“We are very grateful for Barclays Bank’s participation in this significant event. We had no knowledge about it prior to our dealings with the bank. The staff interacted with the children in a very rewarding manner. Going forward, we will incorporate the day into our calendar of events” she said.
