Indian Red Cross

The Indian Red Cross Society’s National Disaster Response Teams are integral part of the strategy to help protect the community in the aftermath of a disaster. The purpose of the team is to facilitate communication and gather and share information immediately after an emergency.
Barclays provided a £100,000 donation to the Indian Red Cross Society to help build the capacity of the disaster response teams at a national level. These activities include:
-
Team building activities to ensure that members operate efficiently on deployment
-
Develop state disaster response teams in three additional states: Madhya Pradesh, Tripura and Uttaranchal. These states have been selected based on vulnerability and minimum capacity to respond.
-
Sector specific training at national and state levels on
-
– Emergency assessment reporting
– Geographical information system mapping
– Water and sanitation
– Warehousing and logistics management
– Disaster health response
– Mobile disaster unit and field warehousing unit training
Repair and replenishment of mobile response units
Procurement of one water treatment and supplies unit for training purposes
Impacts to date
Four mobile response units repaired, two of which were successfully deployed in the flood response in Orissa during the floods in 2007. This made a significant contribution to the availability of safe drinking water to the people affected by the flood.
Improved co-ordination has also ensured the formation and training of state and district disaster response teams in West Bengal. These teams were also deployed during the floods last year, which was a real benefit during these disasters.
Indian Red Cross Society management have also been looking at water treatment and supply units, with presentations given by possible vendors hoping to support the programme.
