Activities to support Ramadan

Traditionally, Ramadan is not only a time when Muslims fast, but also a time for giving. It holds great meaning because it highlights the plight of people who do not have enough to eat at any time of the year.
That’s why Barclays Egypt, in co-operation with Wilad Misr, a local NGO, created three projects in September and October 2007 to show support to the local community and feed those in need.
Food Packaging and Distribution
Barclays made a donation to buy enough food for 1,000 parcels – each feeding a family of four for a month – to be distributed to those in need in various governorates across Egypt.
35 Barclays colleagues located in Cairo head office and branches, came together over two days to help make the parcels and another team of 10 in branches in Alexandria, Tanta, Mansoura, Portsaid and Assiut distributed the packages to the families. In total, volunteers dedicated 180 hours of their time, benefiting 4,000 people.
Ramadan Charity Tent
Barclays sponsored a charity tent that provided 200 daily Iftar meals to 6,000 people during the holy month. The target group included orphans, elderly, people with disabilities and other disadvantaged groups.
More than 45 colleagues volunteered 180 hours of their time setting up the tables and utensils, serving food and drinks, cleaning up and entertaining the community. The children enjoyed the attention they received from the volunteers and gladly welcomed the activities planned for them.
Daily Iftar
Barclays employees also distributed Iftar meals for 400 people from branches nationwide. The funding had great impact on the community as 12,000 meals were distributed throughout the month. Managers worked every day to ensure that they maximised their reach.
