The story so far

Barclays Spaces for Sports is a £30million programme to create sustainable sports facilities in disadvantaged communities across the UK. It is the country’s single biggest investment in grassroots sport by a private company and has won various prestigious awards for its contribution to local communities.

The programme was launched in September 2004 with White Hart Lane Community Sports Centre being the first flagship site to open in November 2005.

In partnership with Groundwork and the Football Foundation, the Barclays Spaces for Sports programme has worked closely with communities across the UK who most needed our help. Together we identified disused or worn out areas which have been regenerated into sporting facilities that local residents need. They now provide access to sport where this didn’t previously exist.

We also provided much wider support of grassroots sports. We have awarded 4,000 coaching packs to underprivileged teams (worth £750 each) and recognised people who have worked tirelessly to support grassroots sports in their area through the Local Hero Award.

Having opened 200 community sports sites across the UK and donated more than 4,000 coaching packs, over 530,000 people have been given the opportunity to benefit from sport.

So far, we have provided access to over 25 different types of sports, from tennis, hockey, football and netball right through to tea-dancing and lawn bowls. There has been support for a whole range of sports, offering something for everyone.
