Egypt

Who we are helping

One of the most serious issues facing Egypt today is youth unemployment: of the country’s 7.9 million unemployed, 7.1 million are below the age of 24, and one young person in every three is without a job.

The root of the problem lies in the changing nature of employment in Egypt: the private sector is growing fast, and the number of jobs in government is dwindling. The country’s traditional education system tends to prepare young people inadequately for the modern workplace. They tend to lack skills in forward planning, critical thinking and analysis, decision making, teamwork and communication – skills that are crucial for personal development and today’s job market.

What’s more, the situation is compounded by the lack of external sources of information and support available when making career choices, and the limited access to training opportunities.

Through this project, we’ll help around 45,000 young people between the ages of 13 and 24 acquire the skills they need and receive guidance and opportunities. Project activities will take place in 10 governorates in Egypt, representing the upper, lower and canal regions of Egypt, as well as in rural and urban areas in governorates including Cairo and Alexandria. We will prioritise women and those living in rural areas and impoverished towns, groups who are particularly disadvantaged within our targeted governorates.

About the partnership

The partnership will undertake projects in more than 10 countries and commit US$10 million in addition to employee volunteering time over three years.

The partnership aims to develop the skills of young people in the communities where Barclays operates by focusing on opportunities for education, employment, entrepreneurship and enterprise. The individual projects will help disadvantaged young people across the globe access education, find employment and start businesses.
