IndiaWhat we are doingUNICEF has already done a lot of work in Maharashtra, building up a network of village community platforms and women’s self-help groups. Much of the focus so far has been on health, hygiene and nutrition. The first component of this project will be extending these topics to include various life and business skills such as financial literacy, book-keeping and leadership skills. Several different programmes will be run, involving a number of trainers and facilitators. The second component will be creating and delivering a new education module for schools that covers life and enterprise skills, including the concept of saving, and fosters an entrepreneurial spirit. We’ll work closely with the state’s education department to make sure the module can be fully incorporated into the school curriculum. We will also encourage local Barclays’ employees to get involved, particularly in the mentoring of young people as they look for a job or start a new business. In the longer term, they might be involved in developing courses on project management, proposal writing and communication and facilitation skills. Together, the two components should result in the successful development of low-cost and replicable strategies that succeed in empowering girls and young women. And to make sure the project’s benefits are sustained, we’ll undertake media-based activities to get the message of female empowerment out to a wider audience.
About the partnership
The partnership aims to develop the skills of young people in the communities where Barclays operates by focusing on opportunities for education, employment, entrepreneurship and enterprise. The individual projects will help disadvantaged young people across the globe access education, find employment and start businesses.
