MexicoWhat we are doingProject activities will take place in 25 schools, directly benefiting 9,000 schoolchildren, and five community centres, directly benefiting a further 400 young people. Indirectly, the project will help 40,000 indigenous young people in Mexico City through community-based work. We’ll work with parents, teachers, public authorities and local communities to create a better environment in which indigenous young people can study: an environment that protects and respects their ethnic identities, but at the same time tackles the segregation that’s common in the school system and encourages cohesion. Project activities will include training 1,200 teachers in ‘participatory teaching’ methods; working with community centres for indigenous groups to protect and strengthen indigenous cultural life; recommending policies for dealing with the increasing migration of indigenous people into Mexico City to the government; delivering media campaigns to promote awareness of indigenous issues and reduce ethnic discrimination; and developing an online platform for indigenous youth to exchange experiences and ideas.
About the partnership
The partnership aims to develop the skills of young people in the communities where Barclays operates by focusing on opportunities for education, employment, entrepreneurship and enterprise. The individual projects will help disadvantaged young people across the globe access education, find employment and start businesses.
