Mexico

Who we are helping

Mexico has the highest GDP per capita in Latin America but its indigenous people see little of its relative wealth: they are one of the poorest groups in the country. And of Mexico’s 104.9 million people, some 9.6 million are indigenous, coming from up to 70 different ethnic groups.

Among indigenous people education levels are significantly lower than those for the non-indigenous population, so they’re less able to find decent employment on leaving school. Half of indigenous people aged 15 and above haven’t completed primary education and nearly a quarter are illiterate, compared to just 5.7 per cent of the non-indigenous population. Even more worryingly, a third of indigenous children who should be in school are engaged in some form of child labour.

The Mexican government’s poverty-reduction strategy has been to make cash payments to vulnerable families dependent on conditions such as school enrolment and health clinic attendance. However, these policies have largely failed to address the exclusion and economic disparity disadvantaged groups face.

Around 12 per cent of the country’s indigenous population live in Mexico City and the surrounding municipalities. Here, 15.6 per cent of indigenous youth aged between 10 and 14 are out of school, as are 72.4 per cent aged between 15 and 19. This project will target indigenous children and adolescents in two economically deprived regions of Mexico City, Ecatapec and Iztapalapa.
