PakistanWhat we are doingThe project has four components, and will be undertaken with various partners. First, 25 child centres will be supported to promote financial independence and to protect children from exploitation. The centres will help rehabilitate child labourers by providing basic literacy, enterprise and skills training, and access to micro-credit style loan schemes for tools and equipment. Second, a pilot programme for child labourers involved in sharecropping will provide access to primary school education on-site during their working day. Third, the project will work with the government to introduce an accelerated learning and skills development programme for adolescents with little or no formal education in four selected technical colleges, enabling them to gain basic literacy and numeracy. Finally, it will bring young people together in four provincial youth assemblies to promote democratic principles and encourage participation in society. Where possible, we’ll encourage local Barclays employees to get involved.
About the partnership
The partnership aims to develop the skills of young people in the communities where Barclays operates by focusing on opportunities for education, employment, entrepreneurship and enterprise. The individual projects will help disadvantaged young people across the globe access education, find employment and start businesses.
