Philippines

Overview

Masbate province is one of the most remote and disadvantaged in the Philippines. The local economy is based on small-scale farming and fishing. Farming income is seasonal and sensitive to climate change. More than one third of the population live below the poverty line.

Given the unreliability of income, children from the poorest families are prone to malnutrition, poor health, low educational attainment, and trafficking. We’ll help 1,000 families, including 5,000 children, by making conditional cash payments, providing skills training, and developing co-operatives.

About the partnership

About the partnership Barclays has joined forces with UNICEF to help children and young people around the world achieve a brighter future for themselves and their communities. The partnership will undertake projects in more than 10 countries and commit US$10 million in addition to employee volunteering time over three years.

The partnership aims to develop the skills of young people in the communities where Barclays operates by focusing on opportunities for education, employment, entrepreneurship and enterprise. The individual projects will help disadvantaged young people across the globe access education, find employment and start businesses.
