PhilippinesWhat we are doingThere are four key project activities. The first involves making conditional cash payments. UNICEF estimates that 25 families in each village in Masbate have children at serious risk of malnutrition or trafficking. The most vulnerable families will be given US$52 every month for 10 months, as long as the children have regular health checks and go to school. The payments will provide a safety net, allowing parents to focus on improving their sustainable income. The second activity is providing leadership and life skills training for young people. Every village in the Philippines has a youth council. We’ll work with these councils to provide the skills needed to enter the employment market, such as CV writing and interview techniques. With improved skills, fewer young people who leave Masbate for the major cities will be vulnerable to trafficking and prostitution. The third activity is building financial literacy and entrepreneurial skills. Mothers and young people will be provided with training in financial literacy and small-business management. Illiterate adults will be given a practical literacy and numeracy course, adequate enough for the running of a small business. This component will help support the economic development of rural Masbate. The fourth activity is developing co-operatives. These are groups of community members who work together to increase their business productivity. Co-operation includes providing micro-finance services such as savings, credit or insurance, and increasing agricultural output by combining resources. We’ll help these groups access local markets and cut out the middle men in order to achieve higher prices for their produce. Masbate’s remote location, makes it harder for local Barclays employees to get involved, but where possible, we’ll encourage them to do so.
About the partnership
The partnership aims to develop the skills of young people in the communities where Barclays operates by focusing on opportunities for education, employment, entrepreneurship and enterprise. The individual projects will help disadvantaged young people across the globe access education, find employment and start businesses.
