Who we are helping

Masbate province is one of the most remote and disadvantaged provinces in the Philippines. The local economy is based on small-scale farming and fishing. Farming income is seasonal and sensitive to climate change. More than one third of the province’s population live below the poverty line.

Some adults in the community have completed a basic education, but many are illiterate and lack basic financial and business management skills. This restricts their ability to make a decent income. For example, local growers can’t always identify markets for their produce and tend to sell to traders from the cities who buy at very low prices while it is still ‘on the tree’ so they can sell it on at a much higher price.

Given the unreliability of income, children from the poorest families are prone to malnutrition, poor health, low educational attainment, and trafficking. Through this project, we’ll help some 1,000 families, including 5,000 children.
