Russia

Who we are helping

While the Russian government has taken steps to improve children’s well-being, many remain in vulnerable situations. Children from insecure family environments frequently end up living on the street, or in care institutions, for long periods of time.

Those on the street are often victims of trafficking, sexual exploitation, child pornography, drug addiction and HIV and AIDS. Those in institutions often don’t receive the systematic and professional support needed to prepare them for future independence – many can’t look after their own children, which leads to the next generation of children living in care.

Through this project, we’ll help around 500 young people directly: 400 currently living on the street or in care institutions in Moscow and St Petersburg, and 100 with special needs. In addition, by improving educational environment in schools and colleges we expect a further 4,000 vulnerable young people across the country to benefit indirectly.

About the partnership

About the partnership Barclays has joined forces with UNICEF to help children and young people around the world achieve a brighter future for themselves and their communities. The partnership will undertake projects in more than 10 countries and commit US$10 million in addition to employee volunteering time over three years.

The partnership aims to develop the skills of young people in the communities where Barclays operates by focusing on opportunities for education, employment, entrepreneurship and enterprise. The individual projects will help disadvantaged young people across the globe access education, find employment and start businesses.
