What we are doing

Making a real difference to the lives of young people in Zambia requires collaboration: organisations with different areas of expertise have to come together in order to create a web of development opportunities that works and is sustainable.

UNICEF, the Zambian government’s Ministry of Sport, Youth and Child Development, and Barclays are already collaborating on a project to rejuvenate youth resource centres in the country. This new project will draw on the experiences learnt from the existing project and focus specifically on business skills and vocational training.

Project activities will take place in four youth resource centres, one in each of the four target locations. The other partners in the project will be the International Labour Organization, the Technical and Vocational Entrepreneurship Training Authority, Africa Directions, and Grassroots Soccer, an organisation that uses the football to engage young men to help fight HIV and AIDS.

There will be three strands to the project: the first of which will be initiatives to teach business skills and provide vocational training, at a basic level, as well as HIV prevention programmes and sports programmes. Graduates of this first stage will move on to one of two more advanced programmes: the GET Ahead programme for budding entrepreneurs; and a work placement scheme, implemented with the help of employers and small business associations.

Barclays has an extensive branch network in Zambia, and we’ll encourage local Barclays employees to get involved.

About the partnership

About the partnership Barclays has joined forces with UNICEF to help children and young people around the world achieve a brighter future for themselves and their communities. The partnership will undertake projects in more than 10 countries and commit US$10 million in addition to employee volunteering time over three years.

The partnership aims to develop the skills of young people in the communities where Barclays operates by focusing on opportunities for education, employment, entrepreneurship and enterprise. The individual projects will help disadvantaged young people across the globe access education, find employment and start businesses.
