ZambiaWho we are helpingThe majority of Zambians are young people: with life expectancy of just 38 years it is not surprising that more than half of the country’s 12 million population are under the age of 20. Around two-thirds of the population live on less than US$1 a day, and 16 per cent are infected with HIV. Social services are very limited and many people live in remote areas. Young people are at risk of social exclusion and exploitation. Zambia’s weak economy can’t deliver sufficient employment opportunities for the growing young population, and the education system isn’t equipping them with the skills they need to find employment or start a business. Through this project, we’ll help around 5,400 young people living in four locations across Zambia: Kaoma in Western Province; Katembula in Copperbelt Province; Timba/Chinsali in Northern Province; and Samfya in Luapula Province.
About the partnership
The partnership aims to develop the skills of young people in the communities where Barclays operates by focusing on opportunities for education, employment, entrepreneurship and enterprise. The individual projects will help disadvantaged young people across the globe access education, find employment and start businesses.
