Supporting Documentation

To satisfy UK and European regulations, we need to verify your identity and your main residential address. To do this, we will need to see some additional documentation with your account application.

1. Proof of your identity

Your current and valid passport, European Union country National Identity Card or Gibraltar ID card is usually sufficient.

If you are visiting a Barclays branch, please take one of these documents with you.

If you’re not able to visit a Barclays branch in person, you will need to have a copy of the original documentation “certified”.

How to “certify” copies of documents

Copies of documents must be certified by writing the following words on the copy of the document:

"Having seen the individual and the identification document at the same time, I can certify that this is a true copy and the photograph is a reasonable likeness".

The person certifying the documents should then sign the certificate and add their full name, title and the date they certified the document, in English. Please follow the instructions on our certification template to help you complete this process and prevent delays in your application.

Who can certify a document?

The following people can certify a full passport:

  • Any member of staff from a Barclays branch, who should use the office/branch stamp
  • A member of staff at a major international bank
  • A consular or embassy official from your consulate or embassy
  • A Government official (national, regional or local) in the course of their duties
  • A qualified lawyer who is a member of the National Legal Association in a Financial Action Task Force country, or equivalent (please contact us and we will be pleased to advise you of the member countries)
  • A notary public in Western Europe, Canada & the USA

2. Proof of your Principal Residential Address

Please supply TWO of the following. Each must clearly show your name(s) and principal residential address:

  • A statement from a major bank or building society**
  • A VISA, MasterCard, American Express or Diners Card statement**
  • A certified photocopy of your Drivers License, which should clearly show your name and principal residential address
  • A UK utility bill (gas, electricity, water, telephone, but not mobile phone) if your principal residential address is in the UK**
  • A letter from a 2nd Consular Official, or higher, of a British Embassy or High Commission in your country. This letter must bear the official stamp or seal and show the official's name and signature

You may provide either an original document or a certified copy.

** These documents should be no more than 3 months old.

How to “certify” a copy

  • A person holding one of the positions listed under ‘Proof of your Identity’ must certify the copy as follows: “Certified as a True Copy.”
  • The person certifying the copy should then sign the certificate and add their full name, title, address and the date that they certified the documents.
