Expat life
- Start by requesting a country profile from Barclays which is available on our Barclays International Online Banking Service. These detailed guides cover everything from the price of a pint of milk to how a country is governed.
- Contact the embassy of your chosen country, which should be able to supply a wide range of informative publications. For a list of all foreign embassies in the UK, go to the FCO website.
- The Tourism Offices Worldwide Directory is a guide to official tourist information sources such as Government tourism offices, convention centres and visitors' bureaux, chambers of commerce, and similar organisations that provide free, accurate, and unbiased travel information to the public.
- If you are going abroad with work, then your employer should be able to provide some local information for you. Ask to be put in touch with any future colleagues who perhaps have similar age children or common interests. Ask for recommendations for leisure clubs or societies.
Once you reach your destination country, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office recommends that you register with the British Consulate there, so they have your details in the unlikely event that you get into difficulty.
- You can find a list of British Consulates abroad on the FCO website. You may also find your embassy a great source of social information. Many run events and host lively expat boards. They'll certainly be able to direct you to any English-language services or societies near your new home.
- The Internet is an excellent source of expat information. There are hundreds of websites dedicated to helping Britons abroad both meet each other and integrate locally. Many of the best are listed in the links section at Expat Expert.
