Here is important information on finding a doctor, dentist or other healthcare professional in Britain.
Registering with a doctor
Registering with a doctor (normally called a General Practitioner in the UK) is an essential first step for newcomers to the UK.
The National Health Service (NHS)
The National Health Service was set up in 1948 to provide healthcare for all citizens. Special regulations apply to nationals of other countries when it comes to accessing NHS services. Contact your nearest Health and Social Security Department before setting off for the UK.
Private healthcare
Private healthcare is also widely available in the UK. If you currently have private medical insurance, we recommend you contact your provider as well as consulting with your employer on the best course of action before leaving for the UK.
Dentistry
In the UK, it's possible to get free or subsidised dental care through the National Health Service. In practice, it is very hard to find a dental practice with places for new NHS patients.
To get NHS dental care, you must first register with a NHS family doctor known as a General Practitioner (GP).
It is likely that you will have to register privately for dental treatment, either on a pay-as-you-go basis, or by buying a dental insurance plan. There's a large choice of private dental plans, which tend to cover a fixed number of annual check-ups and hygienist appointments, plus a certain amount of emergency care.
Optometry
Unless you are on a very low income and receive government benefit, you will have to pay for sight tests and whatever spectacles or contact lenses you need - yourself.
Some employees may receive subsidies/vouchers from their employers to help pay for eye treatment. You can find opticians in the shopping areas of most UK cities and towns.
