Corporate Responsibility (CR)
'Barclays appreciates that the law and morality are not always the same. Our decision to be involved in business is not solely based on compliance with the law. We aim to take account of social, ethical and environmental
aspects when entering into customer and supplier relationships and in assessing financial propositions, as well as in the treatment of our own workforce'.
It is against this background that Barclays has developed its approach to Corporate Responsibility.
We believe that we share a responsibility with our supply partners to uphold the highest standards of environmental, social and ethical practice. Our position on key aspects of Corporate Responsibility is set out below and we expect that our supply partners will support and embrace these values and standards as a minimum requirement.
Managing Corporate Responsibility
The following principles will guide the implementation CR standards in Barclays sourcing and supplier management.
1. Supplier Selection
Barclays will:
- Assess supplier proposals and assign appropriate weighting to CR considerations within the sourcing process; promote where appropriate the implementation of management systems; and encourage improvements further down the supply chain.
2. Collaboration
Barclays will:
- Work collaboratively with Suppliers where significant risk or opportunity is identified to implement these standards and improve all aspects of CR.
- Welcome honesty and openness regarding any failure by Suppliers (or their sub-contractors) to meet these standards and not penalise Suppliers who agree to pursue improvement.
- Not apply higher standards to Suppliers than Barclays own policy.
- Accept alternative standards where they achieve the equivalent of or exceed Barclays own.
3. Target Action
Barclays and Suppliers will:
- Use a risk based approach to the implementation of these standards.
- Focus attention on elements of the supply chain that represent higher risk and where application of these standards will safeguard Barclays and Supplier reputations and make the most difference to our stakeholders.
Suppliers will be expected to:
- Share with Barclays their approach managing CR risk and opportunity.
4. Reporting
Barclays will:
- Report publicly our performance and practice with regard to implementing CR in sourcing and supplier management.
5. Awareness & Training
Barclays and Suppliers will:
- Ensure that all relevant people are provided with appropriate training and guidelines to implement the standards.
6. Monitoring and Verification
Barclays will:
- Monitor CR performance as part of ongoing supplier management and provide constructive feedback where appropriate.
Suppliers will be expected to:
- Provide Barclays or its representatives with reasonable access to all relevant information and premises and co-operate in any CR assessment or audit - using reasonable endeavours to ensure that sub-contractors do the same.
7. Continuous Improvement
Barclays and its Suppliers will:
- Apply a continuous improvement approach to the application of these CR standards.
- Develop improvement plans on a case-by-case approach.
- Seek to identify more ethical and cost effective products and services
