Where the environmental risk assessment indicates only suppliers and/or their sub-contractors with appropriate qualifications and capability will be selected. In other cases it may be acceptable to select suppliers on the basis of a joint commitment to improvement. Supplier environmental management and performance will be monitored consistent with the risk identified as part of ongoing supplier management. Barclays policy in the case of a failure to maintain effective environmental management will be judged relative to the severity and impact of the failure. General policy will be to engage positively* with suppliers in an effort to correct any breach and obtain an undertaking of permanent corrective action. In the event that such an undertaking cannot be obtained then we will consider termination of the contract.

Suppliers will be encouraged to make available cost-effective environmentally responsible products and services, taking into account the whole life cycle of the product or service. Where all other considerations are equal, environmentally superior products or services will be purchased.
